Americans consume approximately 100 pounds of sugar and high-calorie sweeteners each year. Most adults consume 22 teaspoons or 355 calories of sugar a day, while the recommended intake is only six teaspoons or 100 calories for women and nine teaspoons or 150 calories for men.
