GMO Foods – How to avoid buying them
As much as you may try to avoid genetically engineered foods you are probably eating some form of GM food everyday. The Environmental Working Group, an environmental health, research and advocacy organization, estimates that Americans eat somewhere around 193 pounds of genetically engineered food every a year. The only way to avoid GM food is to be aware of which ingredients are more likely to be genetically modified, which means reading food labels carefully in addition to always trying to choose organic foods.
Here are some tips to help you cut GMOs out of your diet:
- Make it a point to buy USDA Organic foods grown from non-genetically engineered seeds. This is especially important when purchasing the present GMO crops.
- If you eat processed foods, buy organic brands or brands that obtain items known to be free of GMOs such as Trader Joe’s labeled foods or Whole Foods Market’s 365 Daily Value labeled foods.
- Eat more whole foods, which are less likely to contain GMOs.
- Because most corn and soy are genetically engineered, make it a point to choose organic or a brand that obtains items known to be free of GMOs. Items such as sweet corn, corn tortillas, corn oil, corn chips, tofu, edamame, soy milk, and baby formula.
- Instead of using canola, corn, soy, or cottonseed oils, choose extra virgin olive oil, organic canola oil (cold pressed), or safflower oil.
- Avoid processed sugar and high fructose corn syrup, which also contain GMOs. If you must use sugar stick to cane sugar, because it is not genetically engineered.
