Fitness for a Cause

Participating in physical activity is good for the whole family, but it doesn’t mean you guys have to be the only ones who benefit. Taking part in a “Fitness for a Cause” event is a good way to get your kids motivated to get up off the couch. You can research which local organizations are hosting fund-raising walks, runs or bike rides — and then get your friends and relatives to sponsor your family.

Another idea may be for you and your kids to plan an event for your whole block or neighborhood and have participants donate canned goods or money to local charities on behalf of the neighborhood! The fitness event can include races such as obstacle courses, relays or three legs. This is a great way to get to know your neighbors while getting fit.

Here are a few “Fitness for a Cause” events:

The Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure is a multi-city walk that raises money for breast cancer research and helps fund community education and outreach programs in your community.

Walk For Wishes is a nationwide Make-A-Wish® fundraiser that celebrates the thousands of wishes that have already been granted, while raising funds for future wishes. For more info: http://wish.org/ways-to-help/fundraising/walk-for-wishes

Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend — Run Disney with a full range of Disney-themed races, including a marathon, half-marathon, and a very “Goofy” 5K family fun run. Tour the theme parks, collect high-fives from Disney characters, and pose for plenty of photo ops along the way. The Walt Disney World® Marathon Weekend benefits The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society®(LLS), an organization dedicated to the fight against blood cancers. The Walt Disney World® Marathon Weekend will help blood cancer patients live better, longer lives. For more info: http://www.rundisney.com/disneyworld-marathon/
