Getting Your Body Ready For Winter

Shorter days, less fresh food and less time participating in outdoor activities can wreck havoc on your health if you don’t prepare for these seasonal changes. Getting your body ready for winter means changing things up a bit.

Here are 5 things you may need to tweak to stay healthy this winter:

Don’t Skip Breakfast

Despite the darker, colder mornings, don’t be tempted to sleep in a bit longer and skip breakfast. I am an advocate of breakfast! Eating a healthy breakfast boosts your energy, curbs mid-day cravings and helps maintain a healthy weight. Also starting those cold winter mornings with a nutritious breakfast may help ward off the craving for those high caloric winter comfort foods and snacks.

Eat Local

Get Your Vitamin D

Vitamin D

Our primary source of Vitamin D is sunlight. When the days get shorter and there are more clouds, our vitamin D supplies weakens. Some studies have found that a lack of vitamin D contributes to such health issues as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, rickets and dementia. It has also been suggested that vitamin D may have a positive affect on mood and sleeplessness during the winter months. Oily fish such as salmon, sardines, fresh tuna and mackerel, will provide omega 3 fatty acids and vitamin D. Also try to get outside when ever the sun is shining.

Stay Hydrated

Your body is about 75 percent water so it is important that you get enough water to prevent dehydration and to keep your cells, organs and body working properly. Consuming less water and/or becoming dehydrated during the winter months can make you tired and the lower humidity of winter can dry out your skin.

Stay Active

For many, the winter months brings hibernation because it’s not always easy to get outside and stay active when it’s cold outside. However, it is super important that you fight that urge to stay locked up inside beside the fire. The easiest way to do this is to find winter activities that are equivalent to your favorite summer ones. You can also participate in some indoor classes like Spinning: Zumba, indoor rock climbing or CrossFit!
