Favorites List – Some of My Favorite Things About Fall and Winter

Whoa it has been quite a few months since I posted a “Favorites List” so here it is, some of my favorite things about Fall and Winter!

I love soups year-round, but even more so during the colder months of Fall and Winter! I’ll make (and eat) everything from chicken garlic to black bean soup. Here is a really useful infographic 10 Easy Homemade Soups from Shape.com

I heart Artichoke Hearts! This yummy vegetable has appeared on many of my favorites list, but I am really in to artichokes right now so here it is again. Besides being absolutely delicious artichokes are low in calories and fat and it’s a rich source of dietary fiber and antioxidants. I am so happy that they are available during the fall and winter. This article from Ocean Mist Farms “All About Artichokes” is super informative! They have tips on selecting and handling to preparing. Really good recipes too! You must check them out!

Holiday Parties and Get-togethers

I love getting together and celebrating with friends and family during this time of the year! I always try to spend quality time with the people in my life throughout the year, but it always feels a little more special during the holidays.

Fall Fashion

I think the one thing I like most about colder weather is Fall Fashion in particular: boots, scarfs and cozy sweaters! I love boots! All you need are some leggings and long tees and you are good to go!

Getting Cozy

The weather during the fall and winter makes me feel warm and toasty inside. It brings a different feeling in the air when the leaves start falling and the weather is crisp and cool. Everyone who knows me knows I love warm weather, but there’s nothing like cozy nights by the fire with a good book and a cup of tea or relaxing with my two girls and Coco (chocolate lab)!

Favorites List – March/April 2014

Here are some of my favorite foods to eat and things to do.

The most favorite thing for me, starting in the month of March is spring!

What I love about spring – it’s like a summer tease! I love sunshine and warm weather, so with spring I get both without the heat of summer.

Here are some Fun Facts about spring:

  • In spring, the Earth’s axis is tilted toward the sun, increasing the number of daylight hours and bringing warmer weather that causes plants to bring forth new growth.
  • The first spring flowers are typically daffodils, dandelions, lilies, tulips, iris and lilacs.
  • Spring fever is not just a myth – the body may experience physiological changes due to changes in diet, hormone production and temperature.

and a really cool poem about spring…

Now on to food…

It is artichoke season, yay! I have fond memories of eating artichokes as a child, peeling those leaves one after the other anticipating the artichoke heart. Besides being absolutely delicious, one large artichoke contains only 25 calories, no fat, 170 milligrams of potassium, and is a good source of vitamin C, folate, magnesium and dietary fiber.

Artichokes are in season March, April, May, June, September, October, November and December.

To Do

Like I mentioned in my Favorite List from February, I have a passion for creating art! I have created two of soon to be four pieces of art from recycled metal, newspaper and acrylic paint! I am excited about these pieces and you can view them on Etsy here. I am working on two more for this four part series using recycled metal. My art is part of Re-Up Arts, which I started with a friend, where we create art using discarded materials. We also provide summer camps and after-school classes for kids to explore using and re-using the available resources around them to create “art with purpose.”

Well that’s it for now. What have you all been up to? What are some of your favorite things?
